Exercise medicine is a new treatment paradigm where physical activity and exercise become part of your health care prescription. The term comes from the ‘Exercise is Medicine’ initiative launched by the American College of Sports medicine and the American Medical Association in 2007.
The ‘Exercise is Medicine’ program urges health care professionals to assess and review a patient’s physical activity and encourage them to participate in exercise that will be beneficial to their current health problems.
Recent research has highlighted the health benefits of exercise in the treatment of a wide range of disease, including, Alzheimer’s, arthritis, depression, diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, chronic pain, kidney disease, Parkinson’s and various cancers. Exercise is Medicine Australia has developed a number of fact sheets on the role of exercise in the treatment of these medical conditions.
